چکیده

Deformable models in the “physically-based” paradigm are almost always formulated in an adhoc fashion and are not related to physical reality. We reinterpret these techniques by putting them into a framework of robust statistics and using this framework to analyze the problems and ad-hoc solutions found in common physically-based formulations. These include incorrect prior shape models; bad relative weights of various energies; and the two-stage approach to minimization (adjusting global, then local shape parameters). We examine the statistical implications of common deformable object formulations. In our reformulation, the units are meaningful, training data plays a fundamental role, different kinds of information may be fused, and certainties can be reported for the segmentation results. We suggest robust statistics to combat interference from the necessarily large amount of unmodeled image information.

Running head: PHYSICALLY DISTRIBUTED LEARNING Physically Distributed Learning: Adapting and Reinterpreting Physical Environments in the Development of Fraction Concepts

Five studies examined how interacting with the physical environment can support the development of fraction concepts. Nineand 10-year-old children worked on fraction problems they could not complete mentally. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that manipulating physical pieces facilitated children’s abilities to develop an interpretation of fractions. Experiment 3 demonstrated that when children unders...

A Comparison Between Semi-Physical and Black-Box Neural Net Modeling: A Case Study

This paper considers identiication of a solar-heated house. Using prior physical knowledge and a semi-physical modeling procedure, a set of physically motivated regressors are determined. With these as inputs a reasonable neural network model of the plant is estimated.

Physically-Based Sound Synthesis on GPUs

Modal synthesis is a physically-motivated sound modeling method. It has been successfully used in many applications. However, if large number of modes are involved in a simulated scene, it becomes an overwhelming task to synthesize sounds in real time without special hardware support. An implementation based on commodity graphics hardware is proposed as an alternative solution by using the para...

A Behavioral Model for DC-DC Converters using Modelica

This paper describes the development of a behavioral model of a dc/dc converter. The focus is on developing a model that simulates quickly, yet retains the behavioral features of a physical converter. Based on a physically motivated behavioral circuit model, the model is then implemented in the Modelica modeling language and simulated using the Dymola simulation environment. Simulation results ...
